Key Development Facts and Sector Updates for Kyegegwa District

  1. Kyegegwa District has 19 Sub-Counties/Town Councils, 81 Parishes and 677 Villages.
     
  2. The population of Kyegegwa is 501,120 according to the census report 2024.
     
  3. In the 2021 Presidential Elections, Kyegegwa had 138,528 registered voters. Out of these, 84,569 (61.1%) voted.
     
  4. His Excellency polled 69,129 (84.8%) while NUP polled 10,656 (13.1%), Amuriat (FDC) polled 451 (0.55%). The others polled 1,293 (1.5%).

PARISH DEVELOPMENT MODEL FOR KYEGEGWA DISTRICT
·  Kyegegwa District with 81 Parishes has cumulatively received Shs. 24,866,000,000=. Out of this, Shs. 24,855,164,000= (99.96%) has been disbursed to 24,855 beneficiary households.
 
·      Kyegegwa has a total of 115,665 Households. Out of these, 24,855 (21.5%) have already received PDM Funds.
 
·      Out of 115,665 Households in Kyegegwa, when you subtract the 24,855 (21.5%) of the households in Kyegegwa that have benefited from PDM, the balance is 90,810 (78.5%) households. These include even those who are already in the money economy.
 
EMYOOGA
 Kyegegwa District has a total of 54 Emyooga SACCOs with 23,481 members. Government has so far disbursed a total of Shs. 2,600,000,000=.

In 2025, Kyegegwa District has a total of 162,659 voters. The Polling Stations are 376 up from 255 in 2021.

EDUCATION SECTOR
Kyegegwa District has a total of;
 
·      72 Government primary schools and 227 private schools.
 
·      9 Government secondary schools and 23 private   secondary schools.
 
The Government secondary schools provide Universal Secondary Education and Universal Post Ordinary Level Education and Training  

DISTRIBUTION OF GOVERNMENT PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE PARISHES
 Kyegegwa District has 81 Parishes, with 40 hosting at least one Government primary school while 41 Parishes are still lacking.  However, Kyegegwa has 72 Government primary schools. There are Parishes with more than one Government primary school.
 
SECONDARY EDUCATION
 Kyegegwa District has 9 Government secondary schools.  It has 23 private secondary schools. The Government secondary schools Provide Universal Secondary Education and Universal Post Ordinary Level Education and Training with a total enrollment of 5,415.
 
DISTRIBUTION OF GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KYEGEGWA DISTRICT
 Kyegegwa District has 19 Sub-Counties, with 7 hosting at least one Government secondary school, while 12 Sub-Counties are still lacking.
 
CONSTRUCTION OF SEED SCHOOLS IN KYEGEGWA DISTRICT
 Kyegegwa District is benefiting with the construction of 4 Seed Secondary Schools. With the completion of these 4 Seed Secondary Schools, the Sub-Counties without Government secondary schools will reduce from 7 to 3.
 

HEALTH SECTOR
Sub-Counties with each having a Health Centre HCIII
 
Out of 19 Sub-Counties in Kyegegwa, 1 has a GH, 1 has a HCIV and 8 have HCIIIs. Therefore, 9 Sub-Counties do not have any Health Facility of either a HCIII, HCIV or a Hospital.
 
The following are planned:

 
·      Upgrade Kigambo HCII to HCIII in Kigambo Sub-County.
 
·      Upgrade Migongwe HCII to HCIII in Migongwe Sub-County.
 
·      Upgrade Migamba HCII to HCIII in Migamba Sub-County.
 
·      Upgrade Ruhangire HCII to HCIII in Rwentuha Sub-County.
 
·      Upgrade Bugogo HCII to HCIII in Bugogo Town Council
 
·      Construct new HCIIIs in Kyatega, Hapuuyo, Kakabara and Mpara Sub-Counties.
 
Hospital or Health Centre IV coverage by Constituency
 
·      Kyegegwa District has a HCIV in Kyaka Constituency with 1 Doctor.

WATER SECTOR

·      Out of 677 rural villages, 256 have access to a safe water source, representing an average coverage of 37.8%. This leaves 421 villages (62.2%) without access to safe water.

*Completed Interventions;(
 
8 new deep boreholes were drilled. (Kyamagabu, Musanju West, Kyangoma, Kyabajojo, Rwembalo, Kako, Katomasi-Kitaleesa B and Kyakaholera)
 
20 springs were protected. (Mukibingo, Muhangi, Butare, Kamugenyi B, Mukonda, Kahungeera, Katoma, Rulimengo, Katerre, Kikomero, Kikuuta, Isandaara, Kitua/Rukara, Kibuga, Rwebisaju, Kyarwanga, Karibajimba, Ntungamo, Karitunsi and Nyakatoke)
 
·       16 boreholes rehabilitated in the sub counties of; Migongwe, Ruyonza, Rwentuha, Kyatega, Kazinga TC, and Kyegegwa TC.
 
·       15 springs rehabilitated. That is; Kihongerwa, Kabweza, Kyema, Kyakikoba, Nkomangani, Igunda A, Kikyedo, Kabaale, Rubona, Kibuuba, Nyamusibura, Akashasha, Kibaale, Rwahunga and Kisoke.
Constructed 2 piped water systems. These include: – Ntuntu GFS in Kigambo sub country and Migamba piped water system serving 1332 persons.
 
Extended piped water supply system in Ruterwa P/S, and Ruhoko mini-Piped water supply system in Kijongobya and Ruyonza sub-counties.
 
·       Completed construction of Kishagazi (Ruyonza Sub County) solar-powered mini piped water scheme serving 900 people through 4 public stand posts and 2-yard connections.
 
·       Completed two additional solar-powered systems at Kyeganwa (Hapuyo Sub County) and Kasikizi (Ruyonza Sub County).
 
Ongoing Interventions;
 
·      Two major solar-powered piped water supply systems are nearing completion.
 
·      A new piped water system at Gasani (Kakabara) is under construction to serve households, schools, and trading centers.
 
·      Drilling of 5 deep boreholes is ongoing i.e Kishagazi, Kihaguzi, Kamusene, Kabaraba and Katamba.
 
 
·      Rehabilitation of 16 boreholes is still ongoing i.e Kisoila, Kikuba, Kyankunyule, Kyabayakwaga, Byaisingoma, Rwembogo, Kiremba, Rwengenyi, Kijwajwa, Kazinga police post, Kayembe, Kyarujumba, Kazizi, Kimoka, Kyegegwa town church and Mundama.
 
·      Mpara Water Supply System construction is ongoing at 86% complete. 5 km of transmission mains and 17.74 km of distribution pipelines have already been laid.
 
·      Construction of Rwahunga–Nyakatoma Extension System is ongoing at 88% completion level. 3.97 km of transmission mains and 32.3 km of distribution pipelines have already been laid.
o   These systems will serve 17 villages across Mpara Sub-county, including: Mpewere, Nyakatoke, Karokarungi, Kijunju East, Mpara Trading Centre, Mpara B, Mpara T/C Central, Kyeganga, Ntuntu, Kyesiga (A, B & C), Kabondaire, Kibaale, Iringa (A, B & C), Kijwiga, Musanju East, Musanju West, Kijunju, and Rwahunga.
 
·      Kyegegwa-Mpara-Ruyonza Piped Water Supply and Sanitation System was designed to Completion under IWMDP. The Implementation is planned for FY 2026/2027.
 
WATER FOR PRODUCTION
 
Completed Interventions
 
Constructed: –
 

  1. Rushayumbe Valley Tank in Rutaraka Parish, Rwentuuha Sub- County (13 acres), with a storage capacity of 15,000m3 Serving 3,578 livestock.
     
  2. Rushayumbe Small scale irrigation scheme in Rwentuuba S/C, Rutaruka Paris, on 13 acres.
     
    Ongoing Interventions:
     
    Mirunga Solar Powered Irrigation Scheme, located in Kibuye Parish, Kyegegwa S/C, is under construction.
     
    Planned Interventions:
     
    Design and construction of 1 communal valley tank using Ministry equipment.
     
    Individual valley tanks to be constructed on farmers’ lands for water security.

ENERGY SECTOR
 
Kyegegwa District is now connected to the National Grid.
