A new chapter has begun with the establishment of the Uganda National Military Museum, with Major General Moses Rwakitarate assuming office as the Chairman of the Implementation Committee.
The committee’s primary responsibility is to oversee the completion of the museum, which aims to showcase Uganda’s rich military history.
Major General Rwakitarate takes over from Major General Henry Masiko, who led the project team and made significant progress in setting up the museum. The Chief of Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Jack Bakasumba, presided over the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya.
Maj. Gen. Bakasumba commended the project team for their efforts and pledged maximum support to the new committee. “The museum will not only tell the history of our country but also be a source of revenue for the UPDF in the form of tourism,” he said. He emphasised the importance of delivering a high-quality museum that meets international standards.
Maj. Gen. Masiko reported that the museum will showcase Uganda’s military history from colonial times to the present day, including the National Resistance Army and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces. He highlighted the strategic location of the museum in Katonga, along the Masaka-Kampala Highway, an area significant in Uganda’s military history due to its association with liberation battles.
Maj. Gen. Rwakitarate recognised the founders of the project, especially the late Lt. Gen. Pecos Kutesa, for their initiative and pledged to take up the responsibility for the betterment of the museum. “I encourage all members of the UPDF to take the lead in supporting this project for the success of the museum,” he said.
The Implementation Committee, chaired by Maj. Gen. Rwakitarate, will oversee the completion of the museum, ensuring that it meets the expected standards. The committee includes members from the UPDF, the Ministry of Defence, and other stakeholders.
The handover ceremony was attended by senior UPDF officers, including the Director of Political Education Land Force, Col. Anatoli Nuwagira, Col. Okei Rukogota, Ms. Harriet Nabunya, and others.
This development marks a significant milestone in the establishment of the Uganda National Military Museum, which is expected to become a symbol of national pride and a tourist attraction.
