On March 31, 2025, Uganda’s power distribution sector reached a pivotal milestone as the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) assumed control of the assets of Umeme Limited. This transition is anticipated to significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of electricity supply throughout the nation, thereby improving service delivery for both residential and commercial customers.
Stakeholders express optimism that UEDCL will prioritise modernisation initiatives and augment investments in infrastructure to address the increasing energy demands of Uganda’s populace. This handover signifies the conclusion of Umeme’s 20-year concession, which commenced in 2005, and is expected to bolster operational efficiency and customer service across the country.
The handover ceremony represented the culmination of extensive preparations and coordinated efforts among UEDCL, Umeme, and the Government of Uganda. The transition process followed a meticulously developed roadmap approved by the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) and was facilitated by a Retransfer Coordination Committee, headed by the Managing Directors of both UEDCL and Umeme.
The transition of Umeme’s assets to UEDCL signifies a substantial shift in Uganda’s power distribution framework. As a state-owned enterprise, UEDCL now bears the responsibility for electricity distribution within Uganda. This change is expected to foster improvements in efficiency, reliability, and affordability within the power sector.
UEDCL is committed to improving the reliability of electricity distribution in Uganda. The organisation plans to invest in advanced technologies and infrastructure enhancements designed to optimise the distribution network’s efficiency. Furthermore, UEDCL pledges to minimise power losses and elevate customer service standards.
The handover signifies the conclusion of Umeme’s 20-year concession.

It is anticipated that Umeme’s transfer of assets to UEDCL will increase customer happiness, lower power outages, improve customer service, and increase access to electricity, particularly in rural areas.
The transfer of Umeme’s assets to UEDCL heralds the beginning of a new chapter in Uganda’s power distribution sector. UEDCL’s dedication to enhancing efficiency, reliability, and affordability is projected to yield considerable benefits for customers.
