President Museveni’s Statement on Besigye’s Incarceration

Must Read

President Yoweri Museveni has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Dr. Kizza Besigye’s arrest and remand. In a statement, Museveni emphasised the importance of a quick trial to establish the facts of the case, rather than promoting insecurity and sympathy through demands for bail and forgiveness.

The President highlighted Uganda’s history of promoting reconciliation and forgiveness, dating back to the 1960s. However, he also stressed the need for accountability, particularly for those accused of serious crimes.

The President noted that the trial process was slowed down due to concerns about gaps in the military courts, which led to the transfer of the case to civilian courts. He urged Dr. Besigye to demand a quick trial to prove his innocence, rather than resorting to hunger strikes and generating sympathy.

President Museveni also addressed concerns about Dr. Besigye’s health, pointing out that he has access to medical care in prison and has been visited by his personal doctors. He questioned the motivations behind Dr. Besigye’s hunger strike, labelling it “unprincipled blackmail.”

Ultimately, H.E emphasised the need for a fair and speedy trial, allowing the facts of the case to come to light and ensuring justice is served.
