President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently delivered a speech at the Bunyoro Youth Empowerment Symposium in Masindi, where he emphasised the importance of wealth creation through commercial agriculture for the people of Bunyoro.
He highlighted that while the government can contribute to the country’s development through infrastructure and services, individual wealth creation is essential for combating poverty and increasing household income.
“There’s a difference between development and wealth. The government can develop the country by offering better services such as roads, electricity, and hospitals. However, it cannot put food on your table or create wealth for you; you need to work to kick poverty out of your homes,” President Museveni emphasised.
President Museveni encouraged the youth to understand the distinction between development, which benefits the entire community, and wealth, which benefits individuals and families.
“Wealth enables you to construct yourself a good house. Even if you have electricity in the area, you will not have it in your home if you don’t have money to pay for it,” he added.
He shared his experience of introducing successful dairy farming in certain regions and promoted his 4-acre model, which focusses on diversification through various agricultural activities.
The President also urged the youth to take advantage of government programs such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model to improve their economic situations.
“For every parish, we’re sending UGX. 100 million every year, which means 300 million shillings in 3 years,” he explained.
He announced financial commitments for the rehabilitation of a primary school (Shs. 260 million to rehabilitate Kabalega Primary School), support for boda-boda SACCOs (Shs. 20 million), and tractors (14 tractors) for religious institutions in the region.
The event was well-attended by various leaders who are committed to addressing youth unemployment and promoting community development.
