On October 2, 2024, Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, held a historic ceremony to officially install Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as its new Chancellor. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Chief Guest, congratulated Dr. Kiyonga on his esteemed appointment, saying, “I also congratulate you on the new Chancellor, Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga.”
Hon. Janet K. Museveni, First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, also congratulated Dr. Kiyonga, praising his vast experience and networks that will advance the university’s cause. She also thanked outgoing Chancellor Professor Ezra Suruma for his exemplary service, particularly during the turbulent COVID-19 times and the main building fire.
“Congratulations, Dr. Kiyonga, on your esteemed appointment. Your vast experience and networks will advance the university’s cause,” said Hon. Janet K. Museveni, First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports.
Dr. Kiyonga, born on September 19, 1952, hails from Kasese District, Western Uganda. He attended Bwera Primary School, Nyakasura School, and Kings College, Budo. Dr. Kiyonga earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University School of Medicine (1973-1978) and later obtained a Master of Health Science (MHS) specialising in Population Dynamics from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (2004).
Dr. Kiyonga’s distinguished career includes various cabinet and non-cabinet positions:
- Commissioner for Planning, Interim NRM Administration (1985-86)
- Minister for Cooperatives & Marketing (1986)
- Minister of Finance (1986-1993), credited with establishing the Uganda Revenue Authority.
- Minister of Internal Affairs (1994-1996)
- Minister of Health (1996-2001), recognised for managing the Ebola outbreak in Gulu (2000)
- National Political Commissar/Minister Without Portfolio, Office of the President (2001-2006)
- Minister of Defence (2006-2016)
- Uganda’s Ambassador to China (2017-2020)
Dr. Kiyonga’s leadership and expertise are expected to greatly benefit Makerere University, and his installation marks a new chapter in the university’s history.
