The handover and takeover ceremony for the offices of the Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Inspector General of Police has been held at the police headquarters in Naguru.
The handover comes after the selection of Abbas Byakagaba as Inspector General of Police, succeeding Martins Okoth Ochola, and Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) James Ochaya who will serve in place of Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Katsigazi.
On May 17, 2024, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, appointed and redeployed personnel from the Uganda Police Force.
The President of Uganda made the appointments subject to Parliament’s approval, under the Police Act, Cap. 303, which mandates the appointment process.
On May 23, 2024, the Appointments Committee of Parliament, chaired by Hon. Anita Among, the Speaker of the 11th Parliament, vetted the presidential nominees for the positions of Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Among the newly appointed officers include AIGP Nuwagira John, Director of Field Force Unit, Director of Research and Planning, Director of Fire and Rescue Services, SCP Waswa David, Director of Counter Terrorism, and Director of Human Resource Development and Training.
The ceremony has been presided over by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire.
