Advancing Palliative Care in Uganda: Experts Weigh In

Must Read

By Akena Martin

Kampala, Uganda – Palliative care experts gathered to discuss the state of palliative care services in Uganda, highlighting progress and challenges.

Dr. Moses Muwanga emphasised the crucial role of data-guided orders in increasing morphine availability. “Accurate data informs our production and distribution processes,” he explained. Muwanga also stressed the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Health, pharmacy division, and facilities.

According to Muwanga, approximately 1% of the global population requires palliative care, including those with chronic illnesses like diabetes and sickle cell disease. Despite 30 years of policy implementation, utilisation remains low due to individual attitudes, cultural beliefs, and lack of awareness.

Miss Prossy Nakyanja from Hospice Africa Uganda shared the organisation’s community-based approach, including mobile hospice services and education programs. “We’re grateful for government support and partnerships enabling us to provide essential care,” she said.

Hospice Africa Uganda’s Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care recently graduated its first masters in palliative care, marking a significant milestone.
