G77+China Demands Action at UN Summit for the Future

Must Read

The G77+China group, led by Uganda’s Prime Minister Rt.Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has urged world leaders to take concrete action at the UN Summit for the Future in New York.

During the plenary session at the UN headquarters, Nabbanja presented the statement on behalf of the G77+China.

Uganda, as the current chair, represents the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries.

Nabbanja emphasized that the future should be free from oppression and global inequalities in development, financing, technology, and innovation.

“The future we want should be free from any oppression and free from global inequalities and ‘divides’ in levels of development, financing, technology, and innovation,” Nabbanja emphasized.

“We hope and have conviction that this Pact should not become another futile exercise but must garner political will and commitment across all levels of global leadership to pragmatically address current issues and lay a foundation for solutions for our future global progress and challenges,” Nabbanja added.

Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto echoed the sentiment, stating that multilateral systems are not providing the desired solutions for equitable development. He demanded permanent African membership in the UN Security Council.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the Pact for the Future offers solutions to the prevailing challenges in the world.

The Summit of the Future aims to produce an action-oriented Pact for the Future, focusing on sustainable development and financing, international peace and security, science, technology, and innovation, youth and future generations, and transforming global governance.

Nabbanja was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Oryem Okello, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, and Head of SDGs in Uganda Dr. Albert Byamugisha.
