National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), a Government of Uganda body mandated to create, manage, maintain and operationeralise the National Identification Register by registering all citizens of Uganda, registering non-citizens of Uganda who are lawfully residents in Uganda, registering births and deaths, assigning a unique National Identification Number to every person registered is gearing up for a mass enrolment exercise.
The entity will issue upgraded National Identity Cards to millions of Ugandans.
With over 15.8 million cards set to expire by August 2025, NIRA urges citizens to be part of this exercise in a bid to register or renew their IDs.
Children:
Ensure that your child receives their National Identification Number (NIN) within 30 days of birth
All parents are reminded to make payments through the bank to avoid being cheated.
You can check your NIN or National ID application status by dialing *216# or calling 0800211700.
Report abandoned or lost children to the nearest police station which will in turn contact NIRA for their identification.
15.8 million National IDs will expire by August 2025
Only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered out of a population of 45.9 million
According to the latest census figures, this means that between 17 and 18 million new Ugandans need to be registered.
With 1.5 million Ugandans born every year, NIRA is urging parents to register their newly born babies to ensure they receive NINs.
NOTE:
The mass enrolment exercise will cater for new and unregistered Ugandans and those replacing expired cards.
The upgraded identity cards will feature advanced security features like iris recognition.
NIRA will also compile the national voters’ register to be submitted to the Electoral Commission before the 2026 general election.
