Status of Renovation Works at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole – as of July 2024

  1. Uganda People Defence Forces Engineering Brigade installed turnstile doors at entrances to control crowds and enhance the security of the games taking place inside the stadium. All gates have steel rail mazes that ensure an orderly approach to the entrances.
  2. The Stadium has a seating capacity of 38,000 people, the flag-coloured section is a VIIP and VIP section including the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, cabinet and Members of Parliament. The section will also host foreign visiting dignitaries from FIFA and CAF.
  3. The Engineering Brigade of UPDF has drilled a borehole to supply water to the stadium to reduce monthly water bills.
  4. The renovation project employs 800 Ugandans, 600 of whom are UPDF soldiers and the rest are from the public with skills in plumbing, electrical wiring, landscaping, painting, roofing, software and hardware installation and tiling.
  5. Some of the smart solutions installed at the stadium include Digital tickets linked to seats; Surveillance  Cameras with a lens range of up to 4km; a venue Operation Centre; a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Centre; and LED Screens.
  6. The renovation of the 72-room Sports Hotel is nearly complete. The facility will be available for Uganda Cranes, visiting dignitaries, and private citizens and can be hired as a venue for weddings and other functions.
