May 26, 2024: H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called for more Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines to combat the viral infection in livestock.
The country has 44 million livestock, including 16 million cows, goats, and pigs, all of which require vaccination.
“You should make more vaccines because Uganda has a lot of livestock. Uganda has 44 million livestock,” he said.
The President, accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, made remarks at his Kisozi farm in Gomba District.
H.E. welcomed the partnership between the Egyptian and Ugandan governments through NARO, stating that faster research and better results would result.
The Egyptian government provided 10 million FMD vaccine doses to Uganda at a subsidised price of 0.9 USD, or 90 cents.
The government plans to partner with NARO to build a factory in Uganda and train Ugandans to use the country’s samples to develop a fourth strain.
